Pure awareness transcends thinking. It allows you to step outside the chattering negative self-talk and your reactive impulses and emotions. It allows you to look at the world once again with open eyes. And when you do so, a sense of wonder and quiet contentment begins to reappear in your life.

Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy

We offer a therapeutic modality called Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) in partnership with an organization called Journey Clinical. Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) is a holistic modality in which ketamine is used as a complement to psychotherapy to help eligible patients experience more frequent breakthroughs and sustained improvement in symptoms.

We take on the psychotherapy portion of the experience, while the Journey Clinical’s medical team supports you on all medical aspects. This includes determining eligibility, developing a custom treatment plan, prescribing the medicine and monitoring outcomes. Below is more information about KAP to help you navigate if it may be a good fit for you.

  • Ketamine is a legal, safe and effective medicine used to treat a variety of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety and PTSD. Ketamine has rapidly-acting antidepressant and mood-enhancing effects, which can begin to take effect within 1-2 hrs. after treatment and last for up to 2 weeks. It works by blocking the brain’s NMDA receptors as well as by stimulating AMPA receptors, which are thought to help form new synaptic connections and boost neural circuits that regulate stress and mood. Ketamine has also been shown to enhance overall neuroplasticity for lasting symptom improvement.  Ketamine can be administered in a variety of ways, including IV infusion, intramuscular injection, via nasal spray and using sublingual lozenges. In my work with Journey Clinical we only use the sublingual lozenge form.

  • The effects of ketamine, which most patients find pleasant, last for approximately 45 minutes. These effects can make you feel “far from” your body, and facilitate shifts in perception that can often feel expansive in nature. Your motor and verbal abilities will be reduced, so you’ll be lying down in a comfortable position during the experience. Once these effects subsided, we’ll spend the remainder of our appointment giving you space to process and discuss your experience. While it may feel hard to articulate what happened during the experience, patients feel like the insights gained are none-the-less clear. Studies have shown that the benefits to mood and neurological growth can last up to two weeks after the Ketamine experience.

  • A typical ketamine dosing session lasts between 1-2 hours and can take place either in-person at my office, or remotely via telehealth.  During a dosing session, you will self-administer your ketamine lozenge at my office. You will be in a comfortable, reclining position wearing an eye mask and listening to calming music. Although a KAP dosing session may be largely an internal experience, I will be present with you the entire time to hold space and provide support as needed.

Psychedelic Integration

Psychedelic integration is the process of weaving the insights and revelations from a psychedelic journey into the tapestry of everyday life. Through the sacred rituals of therapy, meditation, and writing, clients can take a deeper dive into the intricate patterns of their psyche and gently unravel the roadblocks that hinder growth.

It is important to be up-front. A therapist helping you integrate your psychedelic experiences:

  • Cannot tell you where or how to purchase illegal substances (for various legal and ethical reasons; see Pilecki et al., 2021).

  • Does not formally recommend or suggest that you ingest illegal substances.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • The specific course of psychedelic integration therapy depends on your unique needs and goals. Most people who work with us participate in the following sequence:

    Preparation

    1. Typically, the first step is to explore what you’re hoping to get out of a psychedelic experience. If applicable, we will discuss any past use of psychedelics or other instances of achieving non-ordinary states of consciousness (ie., meditation).

    2. Then, you and your clinician will discuss your medical and mental health history as it relates to the psychedelic medicine you are interested in working with. At this point, a referral to a psychiatrist will be made, if no significant risk factors are identified.

    3. Now you’re ready to establish intentions, explore and manage expectations for your psychedelic journey, and ensure you are setting yourself up for success – by examining your daily routines, environment, social interactions, and more. At this stage we may also build up your coping skills through exercises like breathwork and body relaxation techniques.

    4. Journey completed outside of therapy sessions
(Reminder: Psychedelic integration therapy does not include the administration of any substances, or guiding through any substance-induced experiences.)
There are many different avenues people may select for embarking on their psychedelic journey.
      Some people may choose to:
      - Receive ketamine with a trained professional
      - Travel to a country where indigenous healers offer medicine ceremonies
      - Join a church that uses psychedelics as a sacrament
      - Work with a healer that offers alternative methods for attaining altered states of consciousness, such as through holotropic breathwork

    5. Integration
This is the time for us to make sense of and unpack your experience in the here in and now, which is meant to help promote new perspectives, insights, and even transformative behavior change.

  • Psychedelic integration is important because it helps individuals process and make sense of their experiences with psychedelics in a therapeutic and supportive context. Integration enhances insights, emotions, and perceptions gained during psychedelic experiences into daily life, promoting personal growth, healing, and increased well-being.

  • Some questions that arise after a psychedelic journey are: How to navigate feelings of confusion, existential questioning or intense emotional reactions? How to address and make sense of profound insights and /or world views that change how I see myself and the world I created?
