What is Integration? Essential Things to Know
The Art of Psychedelic Integration
At the heart of a psychedelic journey lies integration work, a key process that helps crystallize and solidify the insights gleaned from the psychedelic experience into lasting growth and transformation. While the journey experience itself can initiate the potential for expansion and new perspectives, the deepest benefit comes from processing the material that arises from the journey. The “material” can include but isn’t limited to reflections, memories, images, parts work, archetypal symbols, somatic experience, and anecdotal stories. By sorting through the journey material, clients can synthesize and ultimately make meaning out of their psychedelic experience.
Over time clients can incorporate and integrate these new insights and wisdom into a more reframed view of Self. This work can also help re-evaluate relationships from a place of compassion and re-write narratives from a more expansive, strength-based perspective.
Clinical research has shown that while psychedelic experiences can be enlightening, psychedelics alone cannot produce long term therapeutic outcomes without this essential step. The wisdom received during psychedelic experience requires intentional and persistent follow up, which is why we believe it’s important to engage actively in therapy or some other kind of practice that involves meditation or inner work.
Without it, the journey can become an ephemeral positive peak experience that can quickly lose its power.
Integration also includes proper preparation sessions which are designed to prepare clients emotionally, spiritually and physically before their journey. These sessions involve setting intentions, exploring fears, and addressing any concerns or questions before the journey. Clients are encouraged to avoid unnecessary distractions, be mindful of sleep, and eat a clean and nourishing diet. Setting intentions play a powerful role in shaping the direction of the journey.
Following the psychedelic experience, post-integration sessions become vital in synthesizing the insights, emotions, and revelations that emerged during the journey.
Through ongoing dialogue, reflection, exploration and therapeutic techniques, individuals can make sense of their journey, unpack emotional material, and identify practical ways to incorporate their insights into their daily lives. Questions of identity, purpose, and spiritual values often surface in integration discussions.
These sessions offer opportunities to address any challenges or difficulties that may have arisen during the psychedelic experience. With adequate support, even difficult experiences can become rich therapeutic material.
The importance of integration cannot be understated. A holistic approach includes both preparation and post-integration sessions, working together to maximize the potential of psychedelic experiences. The powerful gains made from Integration can continue for days, weeks and months depending on the individual and the content of a journey.
